South Korea A-Z: Jjimjilbang

We all have those days when we feel run down and in dire need of a place to go to recharge our batteries. In Korea, a jjimjilbang (찜질방) is just the place to get your body back into fighting (화이팅!) shape. A jjimjilbang is a public bath house, where you strip naked, hose yourself down, and slip into a hot tub, sauna, or steam room with a bunch of random strangers of the same gender. The entry fee is usually rather low (between $15-20), and you can also pay for extra services like hair cuts, massages, full body scrubs, manicures, and so on.

If you’re not hung up on hanging out in your birthday suit, jjimjilbangs are excellent places to relax, rejuvenate, and even spend the night. Many jjimjilbangs have co-ed spaces (clothing mandatory) with food, games, and quiet spaces to rest, sweat, or chill with your partner or friend of the opposite sex.

In this episode of South Korea A-Z, we visit Dragon Hill, a jjimjilbang that’s popular with tourists and locals alike. We strip, we shower, we soak, we sweat. We eat, we drink, we play, we sleep. And we leave feeling so fresh and so clean, clean. This is our hottest episode yet. Check it out!

WARNING: This episode of South Korea A-Z does not feature any nudity whatsoever, although it does refer to the state of being naked and the rituals of showering, soaking in hot tubs, and sweating in steam rooms and saunas.
