WATCH: Verbal assault against women 'not new. And that is the problem,' Rep. Ocasio-Cortez says

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., on Thursday spoke out against power structures that support "violent language against women," addressing both a verbal assault from a Republican colleague, as well as the broader culture that make such incidents common even in Congress. On Tuesday, Rep. Ted Yoho, R-Fla., reportedly approached Ocasio-Cortez and called her "disgusting," "crazy," "dangerous," as well as an expletive that the congresswoman repeated on the House floor during her speech. She noted that his "little comments" were not deeply hurtful to her, but that they were part of a larger pattern of abusive language and dehumanization of women. "I am here because I have to show my parents that I am their daughter, and they did not raise me to accept abuse from men," Ocasio-Cortez said on July 23, adding that in his attack, Yoho had given implicit permission to other men to do the same to his own daughter. Yoho appeared on the House floor on Wednesday to apologize for his “abrupt manner," but said he wouldn't apologize for his passion and publicly denied using "offensive name-calling words" against Ocasio-Cortez.
