Islamophobia in 2023: Here’s How Muslim Reporters Are Fighting It
In this episode of the Laura Flanders Show, we do a deep-dive into the challenges and triumphs of Muslim reporters in the face of growing Islamophobia in US news. As Islamophobia continues to rise, what unique perspectives do Muslim reporters bring to the table? And amidst the current political and social climate, how are Muslim Americans envisioning their future?
Dangerous stereotypes about Islam and Muslims persist, with dire consequences for democracy and human rights in the US. Muslim Americans, due to their religion, are disproportionately targeted by hate violence, ranking third after Black and Jewish communities. The UN Secretary-General has highlighted that the nearly two billion Muslims globally represent the vast diversity of humanity. Yet, they often grapple with prejudice and bigotry simply because of their faith.
So, what transformative impact can Muslim reporters have in challenging these narratives? Our guests today include Hibah Ansari from the Sahan Journal, dedicated to reporting on communities of color in Minnesota, and Dalia Mogahed, who spearheads critical research at the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding in Washington, DC. This news update also welcomes back Mitra Kalita of Epicenter NYC. Alongside Sara Lomax, Mitra co-founded URL Media, a network championing Black and Brown media outlets.
Tune in to this video as we explore the intersections of religion, politics, and media, and the pivotal role of Muslim voices in reshaping narratives.
"I grew up immediately post 9/11 in an Internet world where oftentimes the only people I was seeing on TV that might have looked a little bit like me or people in my family were usually victims of war . . . And that can perpetuate really harmful stereotypes, about Muslim women especially." - Hibah Ansari
"I've been covering the Muslim community in New York City pretty much since after 9/11. This has been my whole trajectory for my career. But I have never seen a moment like this." - Mitra Kalita
“Why would you wait for someone to welcome you in your own home? If we don't feel like this is ours and ours to build and ours to fight for, we will never be truly equal in this country.” - Dalia Mogahed
