Paralympic swimmer joins the Rice Owls swim team
Rice sophomore Ahalya Lettenberger is one of 24 women and 10 men who will represent Team USA at the Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 which begin on August 24.
Lettenberger was selected to swim the 400 meter freestyle in the S7 classification based on her performances from the weekend’s U.S. Paralympic Team Trials in Minneapolis in addition to results from the Para Swimming World Series in Lewisville, Texas in April.
She is currently ranked third in the world in her event and won a silver medal in the 400 freestyle at the 2019 Paralympic World Championships in London.
She will be the second swimmer from Rice to compete in Olympic swimming competition. Ginny Farmer, who competed for Rice from 1994-97, swam the 50 freestyle in Beijing in 2008 while representing American Samoa.
