Men's Skin Care from a Dermatologist | How SHOULD Men Treat Their Skin? (2019)

What should Millennial men use for skin care in their 20s and 30s? A dermatologist’s simple skin care routine that covers all the bases. I’ve built skin care routines for thousands of men – including my son. Learn how he turned my advice into an efficient and effective skin care routine.

Frank says that in his teenage years, his routine focused mostly on control of acne (he mostly used the Ultimate Acne Solutions Kit). By his 20’s, his skin care routine became more complex.

Now, at 29, he uses the Calming Zinc Bar Soap to wash his face at night. It helps to remove sunscreen and facial oil from his skin. He admits that when he was younger, he had it in his bathroom (thanks to Mom) but he never used it and didn’t think it was going to work. Now that he uses it, he finds that it’s really effective! The oatmeal is calming and the soap cleans the pores. It also helps to control the dry flakey skin that he gets.

He thought that flakey skin was “normal and just part of life”. Dermatologist Mom knows that this ‘dry skin’ is really seborrheic dermatitis and that it’s a skin problem that runs in the family. Frank sees it as dry flakey skin of his brows and nose and he thinks that it’s “just part of life”. Derm Mom knows that Calming Zinc fixes it!

After Calming Zinc, Frank applies the Daily Face Cream, (he does not know the name of the products!). He uses the Oily to Normal Skin formula. His great skin was a problem in his previous career as an actor because he needed to look older for the roles he was auditioning for. This is an interesting ‘problem’!.

Frank uses the Natural Lip Balm all the time. He applies it at night and throughout the day. He keeps it in his pocket so it is handy at all times. Mom notes that it is certified organic, which is important because Frank is precious to her.

In the morning Frank just splashes water on his face and sometimes puts on sunscreen. Frank uses the Sheer Strength Pure Physical SPF 50+ Invisible Sunscreen now. It has the latest zinc oxide technology and feels really light on the skin. It is also TSA friendly, which is important to Frank as he often flies with carry-on luggage. Mom thinks he would also love the Sheer Strength Pure Physical Spray Sunscreen, which is not TSA friendly. She will ship him one! If Frank is planning to be sweaty and active, he uses Solbar Zinc or Citrix Sunscreen. He has used these for many years. (Mom knows this is one of the reasons his skin looks young!)

When Frank shaves he uses an electric shaver because it is fast. Shaving makes his skin red on the neck and beard area. He finds that the Calming Zinc helps calm the redness from shaving and he thinks it helps get rid of germs. He admits that he does not use a facial moisturizer during the day and resists cleansing his skin more completely during the day because it can feel tight without a moisturizer. He applies the Omega Enriched Face Booster Oil to the beard area. He puts a few drops in his palm and gets the oil on the fingertips to apply it to the skin under the beard. He can get beardruff (which is also seborrheic dermatitis) and the oil helps control that.

Frank points out that beard oil needs to go under the hairs on the skin to fight the beardruff – a trick he learned from mom. He sees online examples where the oil is just patted on the beard hairs and not applied under the hairs onto the skin. He knows this does not work as well.

Frank puts on his sunscreen at the end of his skin care routine. He works indoors and lives in the Pacific North West (and Mom says he needs it every day anyway since the sun is up there too).

Frank’s shower routine: he washes his skin with the Naturally Best Bar Soap in the shower, which is good for dry and sensitive skin. He uses the Salux Cloth and has for years. Frank tried it before Mom started recommending it to her patients. As with most products, he was one of the family guinea pigs to try products. He gets KP, chicken skin, which is another skin problem that runs in the family. The Salux Cloth helps. He uses the Naturally Best Bar Soap with the Salux.

Frank also gets red sensitive bumps on the scalp (which is Pityrosporum folliculitis). He uses Foaming Zinc Cleanser to wash his hair and scalp about every other day to help control the bumps. He always uses it after a workout. After a workout he also uses it as a face cleanser.

To help control the KP bumps on his arms he uses Glycolic Body Lotion and rubs it in well. As a teen he picked the KP and it is better now that he is using the glycolic acid.

Frank also uses the Dry Skin Hand Cream all the time and teaches Mom something new – it’s TSA friendly!

As Frank describes his skin care routine he thinks that it sounds like a lot, but he says that it doesn’t feel like it.
