Don’t be like a dictator: MP Aga Rahullah slams Omar Abdullah for ‘backtracking on promises’
Don’t be like a dictator: MP Aga Rahullah slams Omar Abdullah for ‘backtracking on promises’
Srinagar, Oct 25: National Conference (NC) Member of Parliament Aga Rahullah on Saturday launched a sharp attack on Chief Minister and party vice-president Omar Abdullah, accusing him of backtracking on promises made to the public ahead of the last Assembly elections.
Talking to reporters, Rahullah said Omar Abdullah had sought votes on the assurance that electricity meters would be removed if the NC returned to power. “Before the Assembly elections, he sought votes on various promises. He promised that his party would remove electricity meters if voted to power. Now he is saying meters are necessary. I am not against meters, but first improve people’s living conditions,” Rahullah asked, according to news agency Kashmir Indepth News Service (KINS).
Questioning the party’s performance, Rahullah said he felt embarrassed to seek votes from people in Budgam on the basis of the same unfulfilled promises.
“On what grounds should I go to the people and seek votes again? They should tell what they have done on political aspirations. Even the reservation issue is in their hands, which they can resolve within three days, but they did nothing,” he said.
He accused the government of neglecting the youth and “pushing them to the wall”. “You say you won’t come under pressure. You don’t have to show dictatorship. If you don’t want to come under pressure, then LG rule was the same, as even the LG did not come under pressure,” he said, drawing a comparison between the current government and the previous administration under the Lieutenant Governor.
Rahullah said the government should have taken confidence-building measures before seeking public support. “You have to be accountable and responsible,” he added.
Amid growing internal discontent, Rahullah has refused to campaign for NC candidate Aga Mehmood in Budgam, indicating a widening rift within the party ahead of the polls. (KINS)
