Acid-base balance
• Critical in maintaining homeostasis in the body
• Primary factors in the homeostatic process include the lungs, kidneys, & buffer system.
• Lungs control CO2 in blood - if not functioning properly, CO2 builds up - leading to acidosis
• Kidneys retain or excrete bicarbonate (HCO3) - neutralizing the excess acid in the blood
• If both lungs & kidneys are working properly, the natural buildup of acids will be neutralized effectively by the buffer system.
