The U.S. President Vomited on Live Television

On January 8, 1992, U.S. President George H.W. Bush attended an official state dinner hosted by Japanese Prime Minister Kiichi Miyazawa in Tokyo.

During the nationally televised event, Bush suddenly appeared weak, vomited toward the Japanese Prime Minister, and briefly fainted in his chair. Secret Service agents immediately rushed to secure the situation as guests watched in shock.

It was later revealed that Bush had suffered from acute gastroenteritis, commonly known as a severe stomach illness. After recovering, Bush reportedly joked about the incident himself.

The moment became one of the most infamous and embarrassing incidents in modern diplomatic history. In Japan, the event even inspired the slang term “Bushusuru,” loosely meaning “to vomit suddenly.”

Interestingly, the incident happened roughly one year after the Gulf War ended, while Bush was traveling across Asia to strengthen U.S.–Japan economic relations after the conflict.
