Inexpensive Materials & Methods for Oil Color: Part 2 of 2

In this video, I show various methods artists can use to make their own painting panels.

Note: About sealing (or sizing) your paper surface for oil painting.

This aspect is generally covered in part 1 but in this second part I'm working with Hahnemuhle Ingres paper in all my examples. As I sealed this paper I've noticed it was more absorbent than the Arches watercolor paper I was using in part 1. So I ended up applying up to 3 coats of the acrylic medium to this paper. However, I noticed that the layer under can soften a bit as you apply the next layer, making this medium somewhat re-wetable. I still feel the paper is properly sealed against the oil but as a precaution, I've started using Gamblin PVA size as the first coat. As an alternative to the acrylic gel Gamlin PVA size https://t.ly/3DOx or even a clear gesso such as Liqitex https://t.ly/oQoM can be used instead. But each product will give you a slightly different surface.

I believe papers such as a hot pressed watercolor paper (or cold pressed) or a drawing paper with a hard surface such as Canson Mi-teintes are better suited for this. Also I want to mention that using illustration board or mat board as the support also works great and you don't particularly need to mount it down depending on its thickness.

This might seem overwhelming or confusing but really the overall concept is quite simple. You are using a water based material (PVA, acrylic gel medium, gesso, transparent gesso, water based house paint, acrylic paint, maybe even thinned down Elmers glue) to proved a separation between the paper fibers and the oil paint. Everyone has different resources so you'll just have to experiment with what you have and find what works for you. Even MY methods and materials change and evolve.

I have tons of great content there, including model reference packs you can download to use in your own art. And the amazing part is, it only costs $1.00 a month. Why only a $1.00? Well I figure most artists don't have lots of extra money laying around but still need to learn how to create and improve on their art, and I like to share what I’ve learned on my journey as an artist. Besides, I think we already spend enough money on art supplies, right?! Quality content doesn't have to be expensive. Enjoy.
