India’s New Light Tank for 2026: The AMX-13 Legacy Reborn

The AMX-13, a French light tank introduced in 1952, was utilized by the Indian Army during the 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pakistani Wars. In the 1965 war, the 20 Lancers, equipped with AMX-13 tanks, effectively countered Pakistan's armored assault in the Chhamb-Jaurian sector, destroying 13 enemy tanks and preventing the encirclement of Indian forces. These tanks were valued for their mobility and firepower in mountainous terrains. Post-conflict, the AMX-13s were relegated to reserve status and eventually phased out of active service. Some were repurposed for target practice by the Indian Air Force, while others serve as static memorials at various military establishments.([Wikipedia][1], [Bharat-Rakshak.com][2])

In response to the evolving strategic needs, the Indian Army has recognized the importance of light tanks, especially for operations in high-altitude regions like the Himalayas. The limitations of heavier main battle tanks, such as the T-72, in such terrains underscore the necessity for more agile and versatile armored vehicles. Historically, light tanks like the AMX-13 and PT-76 have proven effective in mountainous warfare, prompting the Indian Army to seek modern replacements.([forceindia.net][3], [IMR][4
