The Nature of Education | Megan Patterson | TEDxCherryCreek
Outdoor-based education, also referred to as Forest School, is a movement that offers children the freedom to learn in and from Mother Nature. This model of education and learning has proven to support many developmentally-appropriate academic, social and emotional, and environmental skills for children of all ages and is quickly spreading across western cultures. There is an ever-increasing divide between humans and nature due to a fear of the outdoors and a push for academic rigor. A number of studies have shown that direct exposure to nature is imperative to children’s development, as well as their mental and physical health. If children are not provided adequate time outdoors they will lose their inherent connection with nature, a connection that leads to compassion for the natural world. Mother Nature also teaches important skills that children will need to be successful in the 21st century. Megan Patterson is the Founder and Head of School at Worldming School, an outdoor-based, non-profit independent school in Denver. While working on her graduate degree, Megan discovered the outdoor-based model of learning and development. After teaching in public school settings all over the world for several years and conducting extensive research on the outdoor-based model of education, she knew this was the type of learning environment she wanted for children in Denver, including her own son whom she saw thriving in an outdoor environment. In 2015, Megan opened Worldmind as a child and caregiver outdoor-based enrichment program. This fall, Megan is expanding Worldmind to include an elementary school. Megan holds a B.A. in Communication and an M.S. in Ecological Teaching and Learning. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
