From NYC to SFO

How to get to San Francisco?
Fastest option is a flight and also the most practical. It takes 6 hours on a domestic flight from NYC to SFO. Road journey is easily more than 2 days.

Which airport in New York?
New York has three airports JFK (most popular), La Guardia and Newark (great for those in New Jersey). We took a flight out of JFK because of the flight options and also thought it was most convenient.

Which airline to fly?
All major airlines have routes domestically. American, Alaska, United, Delta, Jet Blue.
It purely depends on your choice, fare price and whether or not you want a direct flight vs 1 or 2 stops. A direct flight is 6 hours.

Besr time to take a flight?
Considering most hotels allow check in after 1 pm, its best to take something around 7 or 8am so as to reach SFO around 1pm. This would avoid loitering around either the airport or in hotel lobbies.

How to get to JFK?
Depends on which part of NYC you're coming from. If you're around Times Square the best is to take a train from Penn Station. Long Island Rail Road and get off at Jamaica and from there an Air Train to your respective Terminal.

How to get SFO Airport to City?
Depending on where you live. You could either take a BART train to Milbrae and then take a Caltrain to Union Station or a BART train to Powell Street and then walk to Union.

if you have some luggage then please consider LYFT (car ride app) similar to UBER. Its nominal.

Where to stay in SFO?
Union square is the heart and has lot of options but it's pretty much like downtown and has a very busy neighbourhood.

If you'd like something quieter consider Nob Hill or Van Ness Avenue. You also have options near Fisherman's Wharf, Pier 39 (closer to the waterfront area) or Chinatown (as the name suggests, it's a Chinese community)

Areas to avoid?
While researching, we didn't read positive reviews around Tenderloin, Mission District and Hunters View.
One good way to find out is to go on Booking.com and filter by lowest rating, if you consistently find people rating an area bad then you know its not worth the deal.

Where to eat?
Plenty of choices everywhere. Lots of Asian and Chinese options since there's a huge community of Asians in SFO. Just a tip to please check Google Maps for reviews and timings. Most places shut early.

Is tipping / gratuity a thing there?
Short answer is YES, BIG TIME. As a standard 15-20% is considered acceptable. I mean it can get a bit annoying at times but please decide wisely. Don't succumb to the tipping pressure!
