Why Insulation & Drywall Alone Won't Soundproof Your Basement

Will finishing a basement with standard materials like insulation & drywall actually help to soundproof it? Today we’re testing that by recording my drums from the floor above through 4 different stages of my basement construction process. We’ll listen to the sound leakage before I did any finishing work, then we’ll check and see if R-38 insulation in the ceiling does any good. Then we’ll put up the drywall (2 layers on ceiling, 5/8” on top of 1/2”) and see what that does. Finally, we compare sound leakage with and without implementing a solid exterior door to potentially block off sound to the studio. The ultimate goal here was to greatly lessen the amount of noise bleed going upstairs, and the amount of blockage here is impressive considering the standard construction materials. I found this test to be fascinating, and I really enjoyed learning all of this myself. I hope you enjoy!
