Marion Cotillard on "Rust and Bone," Creating Character from Mystery & the Unknown (2012)
We take a look at the past to shape our future.
In 2012, Marion Cotillard sat down with Charlie Rose for her first appearance at this table to discuss "Rust and Bone," working with director Jacques Audiard, and what draws her to the unknown in every role.
On falling in love with the script: "I expected Jacques to write a beautiful and very special story, but I didn't expect him to write a love story. So it was even more exciting."
On creating Stephanie: "Before this movie, I did a lot of movies based on true stories or characters from comics like Batman. With Stephanie, we started from almost nothing. The background of the character is almost nonexistent. We really had to create almost everything out of a big mystery."
On growing up with theater parents: "They were happy and passionate about what they do. It's kind of contagious. All the people around them sharing the same passion of storytelling, for a kid, it's kind of marvelous."
On why she became an actor: "When I was a kid, I wanted to do so many things. Then I realized if I wanted to do a lot of things, being an actor was a good way to explore different jobs, different emotions. You learn a lot about human beings doing this job."
On confidence: "Confidence will never be part of my life. The creative process is not something that will bring you confidence because you jump into the unknown constantly. That's what we're looking for. It's vibrant. It's like a boiling volcano."
On her remarkable directors: "Soderbergh, Michael Mann, Woody Allen, Tim Burton. I feel very lucky that I can explore different genres, different universes, live through different visions of amazing directors."
