Asian koel (Eudynamys scolopaceus), male

Also known as: Sewah tahu, Burung tuwu, 噪鹃, 升Key雀, นกกาเหว่า

Males are black while females are in spotty brown.

Their call is iconic in some of the Southeast Asian countries. If you hear their call in background of any video, drama or movie, you know it was most likely filmed at this part of the world.

Australia has another species namely Pacific Koel (or Eastern Koel, Eudynamys orientalis). Their calls are a bit different, although very similar.

In Hong Kong, Asian Koel is known as 噪鵑, which literally means "noisy cuckoo". It has a nickname 升Key雀 (key raising bird), due to their behaviour that they will start making call at lower key, but the key for subsequent calls will gradually go higher and higher.

The three species of koels: Asian Koel, Pacific Koel, and Black-billed Koel, are collectively known as common koel.
