Newsreel footage, IWM IWM 1062-02a & IWM 1062-02b, showing the armed forces of the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman Empire joined the Central Powers in an Alliance against the Allies. Early in the war they dealt a number of victories including Gallipoli and the Siege of Kut which Historian Christopher Catherwood has called the siege "the worst defeat of the Allies in World War I." When Serbia was overrun the Ottomans had a direct link between Berlin and Constantinople. In addition to war materiel, hundreds of German officers were integrated into the Ottoman Empire.
