Dots Cupcakes: How a First Time Entrepreneur Reached Sweet Success | Reach Further

Hailey Kwon is the first time entrepreneur who opened Dots Cupcakes -- a gourmet cupcake bakery. Her gourmet cupcakes have been featured in numerous magazines and at celebrity events, and her business makes more than a million dollars annually.

This all was born out of a tragedy in Kwon’s life – her father suddenly passed away because of a heart attack. As she grieved, she began to realize that “life is short and you need to do exactly what you need to do.” An idea began brewing in Kwon’s mind for a cupcake bakery business to help people celebrate special life moments.

Once she made up her mind, she started finding all the resources for opening up the cupcake shop --leasing a small place on a main thoroughfare, and getting the credit she needed from a bank. But mostly importantly, she learned how to bake from scratch by researching, reading in the library, and trying over 2,500 cupcake recipes. Two years later, she opened a second cupcake shop and now she sells about a thousand cupcakes a day.

As a first time business owner, Kwon drew heavily upon the advice of her mentor who pointed her to a lot of resources. She also worked hard to overcome the fear new entrepreneurs inevitably have when starting a business. Along the way she learned to relinquish control of certain aspects of business in order to scale up. Soon Kwon will realize her dream and open a sit down café in East Pasadena, Calif., thanks to a business loan she got through East West Bank. Now she will share special life moments with her customers.
