In 1895 Oscar Wilde was convicted of homosexuality and sentenced to two years hard labour at Reading Prison in Berkshire. During his time there Trooper Charles Thomas Wooldridge was hanged for the murder of his wife. Wildes epic poem is a searing indictment of capital punishment and the penal system of his time.
