GEMINI OVERVIEW

Gemini was founded in 2014 in the US by the Winklevoss twins. It is one of the biggest fully regulated cryptocurrency exchanges, where you can buy and sell over 20 cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and Litecoin (LTC). They are regulated by the New York Department of Financial Services, and have achieved the highest level of security and regulation compliance in the industry.

Gemini has taken a security first approach, and have never been hacked in their 7 years of operation. They keep the vast majority of their holdings in cold storage and have top of the line protection on all their private keys. They are widely regarded as the most secure in the crypto space. They are also the custodians for BlockFi.

The user experience is top notch on both the mobile app and website. The buying process is extremely quick even without funds on your account but you will need to wait a couple days for transfers to clear before sending crypto out. For payment methods, they take bank transfers, debit cards, and wire transfers, but not credit cards. The fee structure is a little complicated but pretty fair compared to other exchanges.

CONSIDERATIONS

Cryptocurrency in general is still relatively volatile. It could easily half in price so just be careful with the money you put in!

Gemini is heavily regulated, so you need to provide them with a lot of personal information to open an account. Part of the appeal of crypto is the anonymity so this could be uncomfortable for some people

Digital currency is kept mostly in secured cold wallets, but there are some that are stored in hot wallets. These have a greater chance of a security breach happening, but are also insured by Aon. The USD Wallet is FDIC insured up to $250,000, which is pretty unique to crypto exchanges. This is nice because you need to have your account funded with USD in order to transfer out.

These aren’t your wallets so Gemini can freeze accounts if necessary. Gemini has a wonderful reputation at stake so its highly unlikely they’ll run off with your assets. They also have great customer support.
