Commodore 64 RTC COPY PROGRAM 2 DRIVES 8 9 1541 EXPERIMENTS 5 1/4 C64 C-64 C128 Mode - Episode 3965
MORE RTC COPY EXPERIMENTS AND TESTING...2 DRIVES, 8 & 9!
On one of the basket case disks I found RTC COPY...it had been decades since I used this...I figure it is about 4 times faster than copy/all...but at times, there were hiccups...
COPY/ALL BY JIM BUTTERFIELD IS NOT FAST, AND IT WILL NOT COPY PROTECTED DISKS, BUT IT IS RELIABLE! I am just going to quickly load up all the programs I copied with it and see if they worked...I especially enjoy messing around with SAM!
This is how we used to copy disks when the Commodore 64 first came out...on the 1541 TEST/DEMO disk, there were some programs including, but not limited to a program called COPY/ALL by JIM BUTTERFIELD!
It was not fast, but it was reliable to be sure!
First you have to change one of the drives to device 9 with another program on the disk that was called something like CHANGE DEVICE, after it was loaded you had to make sure that one of the two drives was turned off and then you would temporarily make the one that still had power to be device 9.
If you did this often, there was a way to make such a disk drive device 9 permanently, but that is another story...
After you have made the change, turn on the other drive so you now have an 8 and a 9...then load up Jim's program, decide if you are going from 8 to 9 or 9 to 8, and follow along...
THIS IS NOT A FAST PROGRAM...AN ENTIRE DISK MIGHT TAKE AN HOUR OR MORE BUT JUST TRUST THAT IT IS WORKING AND EVENTUALLY YOU WILL HAVE A COPY OF THE DISK!
Oh yes, if the output or destination disk is not formatted, it will let you do that...put in a disk name and then a two character ID and the disk will be formatted...it is not a bad thing to take the source disk out of the drive or open the door before any such operation begins just in case you have made an error and you end up wiping out everything on the original disk that you meant to copy!
Bring your patience...and enjoy the historical significance of using a Jim Butterfield program...have a great day in the World of Commodore...David Bradley
