The Real History Behind The Last Kingdom Explained
The Last Kingdom is not fully historically accurate — but the real history behind it is surprisingly strong.
The series is based on Bernard Cornwell’s Saxon Stories novels and takes place during the real Viking invasions of Anglo-Saxon England in the 9th century.
Many major elements are historically real:
* The Viking invasions
* Kingdoms like Wessex, Mercia, and Northumbria
* Alfred the Great and his attempt to unite England
* Historical rulers like Edward the Elder and Aethelflaed
* Real Viking leaders such as Guthrum and Ubba
Even major battles like the Battle of Edington actually happened.
The biggest fictional element is Uhtred of Bebbanburg himself. He was loosely inspired by a real nobleman called Uhtred the Bold, but that historical figure lived about a century later.
Bernard Cornwell intentionally created Uhtred as a fictional warrior so he could move between Saxon and Viking worlds while witnessing real historical events firsthand.
That blend of real history and fictional perspective is exactly why the series feels authentic without becoming a documentary.
