WHY AM I NOT SAFE? | The Bitter Truth of Women's Safety | RG KAR Doctor's Rape Murder Case | #rgkar

I am Nidhi and here, I speak about the bitter truth of women's safety in India. On one hand women are breaking barriers at an unmatched pace, they are pioneers in every field of science, commerce and culture, while on the other hand their main priority is their survival. India is independent in its preamble but women are not sovereign still when it comes to making decisions about their life so much. Their safety is the main concern of their family that they create double standards for them. It takes many positive examples for a family to change and direct their way of thinking in a progressive direction. All of the change has the potential to go down the drain just with the incidence of one negative incident. 

The RG KAR Medical College and Hospital's 31 year old chest medicine resident doctor became the unfortunate victim of a heinous gang rape and murder on August 9, 2024. This happened while she was inside the seminar room of her college/ hospital attending to her night duty. The case has ignited nation-wide protests to erupt at mass level following from the epicenter of Kolkata. 

Every day the medical students and staff along with the non medico citizens of India are getting on the streets and demanding justice for the doctor and a strict punishment for the culprits. We also demand the implementation of the healthcare workers protection act. 

On August 17th, the Indian Medical Association announced a 24 hour doctors strike wherein all the medical services were closed except the emergency services. If justice is not served in time, the doctors claim to even retrieve the emergency services.

Every few years, we are shaken by some bone chilling gruesome case that causes us to protest but the problem continues to persist. There is something fundamentally wrong in the way we are functioning as a society that we are not able to guarantee physical safety to half of its population. This is part one of this 2 video series. In the next part, I will shed light on actionable steps we as people can take to prevent this from escalating.
