Nzou - the elephant that thinks she's a buffalo

Nzou is the oldest elephant at Imire, and has been with us for over 40 years, since she outgrew her previous home at a sanctuary in Harare. This incredible elephant matriarch arrived when there were no other elephants at Imire, so she was placed with the next biggest herd animal, the buffalo. And this is where she has remained ever since.

Despite efforts over the years to integrate her with the other elephants as they arrived, she has refused all attempts, and made it very clear that she wants to return to her new and unique family. She rules the buffalos in a strange situation - elephants being a matriarchal society, whereas buffalos are patriarchal. She has encountered her fair share of challenges to her authority from young buffalo males, and she has killed 14 bold would-be usurpers over the years.

Is she an elephant, or is she a buffalo? Or is she just our very own, unique, buffalant?
