Chicago Marathon 2018 Motivation

These are my thoughts leading in to the 2018 Chicago Marathon. This video took 3 hours to script, narrate, and edit, but it's been a year in the making.

Our greatest strengths arise from adaptions our greatest weaknesses (~Malcolm Gladwell)

A marathon is 26.2 miles, a distance long enough that the first person to run it died at the end. Today, people can run much farther distances than that. 50K’s. 50 mlies. Even 100 Mile races, if you’re crazy enough.

But the marathon, it’s a special distance. And it’s a special kind of race. It’s long enough that no one can rely solely on their natural ability or anaerobic birthright. Even the most gifted among us must train, and prepare, and persevere to run a marathon. And so the race - it’s our time to put aside all our restraints, a time to see what we’re really made of…

Or so we’ve been taught.

We’ve been taught that what we do on any given day is just a run, and that it’s race day that matters. But what matters - what really matters - are those everyday runs. The morning runs that start before dawn. The evening runs where we work a full day and still get out there and log those miles. The winter runs in conditions where our friends and family think that we must have surely lost it. And those other days still, where we’re stuck on the treadmill.

We run on the days where we feel good. We run on the days that we don’t. We run on the days where we’d rather just sleep in. Or go out. Or do just about anything else.

We keep running, even when it hurts. We keep running, even when we don’t feel like running those tempo runs. We keep running those long runs, that interval run where we know we won’t hit our paces, or that track session where we think we are going to die. And we keep running, even when our dreams, those insane dreams that we never thought we could reach anyway, get pulled that much further away from us.

And yet we get our there. And we run. And we keep running.

And it is on those non-race days - these every day runs, these training sessions - these are the true measures of what we are made of. Whether we’ve been training for months or we’ve been training for years. We’ve been testing ourselves. Pushing ourselves. Picking ourselves up off the ground, we go out there, and we run.

This is how we’ve seen what we’re made of. This is how we’ve proven what we can do. We have pushed ourselves to the top and we have seen the other side.

And so we don’t need the marathon to show us what we can do. We already know it. The marathon is not a race. It’s a victory lap.

It’s why we gather, by the hundreds. By the thousands. From near and far. We’ve spent hours and days and weeks, by ourselves. Running. Running. Running. Until we all meet at the marathon. And show the rest of the world what we all already knew. This is who we are. This is what we can do.

We race because it is a celebration of running. It is a celebration of what I, as an individual, can do. It is a celebration of what we, as a people, can do. It is our reminder in this increasingly electronic world of what we can do when get out there every day. And run.
