🐎🤖 Bio-inspired robot explains animal gait transitions
EPFL's team led by PhD student Milad Shafiee, along with co-authors Guillaume Bellegarda and BioRobotics Lab head Auke Ijspeert, have trained a four-legged robot using deep reinforcement learning to navigate challenging terrain, achieving a milestone in both robotics and biology.
The robot learned to transition between walking, trotting, and pronking to avoid falls on varied terrain, prioritizing viability over energy efficiency. By modeling locomotion control after animals' brain, spinal cord, and sensory feedback system, the team demonstrated that the robot autonomously changed its gait to prioritize avoiding falls, showcasing a novel bio-inspired learning architecture.
This research holds promise for enhancing robotic agility and reducing reliance on animal models in biological research.
