Australia 'standing its ground' navigating trade tensions with China
Prime Minister Scott Morrison has stressed that the government has taken “completely unremarkable” steps in response to China’s economic sanctions on Australian exports and will continue to take diplomatic steps toward resolving the matter.
The prime minister cautioned against “getting too far ahead of oneself when it comes reading into the statements that have been made” about China’s decision to ban beef exports from four Australian abattoirs as well as threaten to impose significant tariffs on barley.
“We are always consistent, we draw very clear lines about things that are very important to us, as does the Chinese government, and we respect their lines as we expect our lines to be respected,” he said.
“We are standing our ground on our values and the things that we know are always important.”
