Former village of Uzkoe - Decaying Houses In the City of Moscow.

A former village of Uzkoe in the Yasenevo district in the South-West of Moscow is a quite amazing place. Time seems to have stopped there. The area comprises of the sanatorium "Uzkoe" of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Church of Our Lady of Kazan, cozy picturesque ponds, and... crumbling barracks - the remnants of the once prosperous village of Uzkoe. Some of these barracks are empty, others are still inhabited.

The houses were built in the 1930-50s to accommodate the staff of the sanatorium "Uzkoe". Years have passed since then, the houses became decrepit, and now they could easily create a scenery for a post-war movie.

More than one generation of residents has been hoping for demolition of the houses and resettlement. However, nothing has changes. The houses were included in the Moscow major reconstruction program for 2015-2017, but the problem is - they are basically beyond repair. The wooden ceiling has rotted, the building frames have also rotted, therefore reconstruction is not economically feasible.

The inhabitants have also fallen into a legal vacuum. No one already knows whether these houses belong to departamental housing, service housing, or have no owners at all. Most tenants have nothing on their hands, except for apartment orders (a document authorizing a person to move into the apartment) issued in the middle of the last century.

The land under the houses is federal property and is part of the Uzkoye historical estate protected area. No building is allowed here, so developers, who could help with relocation of the people, are not interested in buying this land out. Apparently, this is a hopeless situation for the barracks' inhabitants - they can hope for neither privatization, nor resettlement, nor even a queue for municipal housing.

Despite it's atmosphere of desolation, Uzkoe is a wonderful location for walking. Another part of Uzkoe is a beautiful park, but this is another story.
