Shanghai is the first Chinese city to implement an ambitious nationwide trash sorting and recycling programme, but residents have been struggling to shift over to the new system since it started on July 1, 2019.
There is a tremendous volume of waste generated by more than 1.3 billion people who live in China, which is ranked as the world’s second-biggest producer of trash after the United States.
People who fail to follow the new rules in Shanghai already face hefty fines and a possible lowering of their social credit scores.
