Raspberry Pi Side Project

For many years I've had a dream of being able to request music from anywhere in my house. I'll be in the kitchen and feel like listening to energetic music, or playing with the kids in the family room and feel like playing something interesting for them. Growing up as a Star Trek fan, I always envisioned being able to audibly request music from the house computer.

We are almost at the point where this is an achievable goal. I realized the other day that I carry a microphone (my cell phone) around with me all the time, and that modern smart phones have voice recognition built in. Couple that with being able to buy a full computer (Raspberry Pi) for $35, and I realized I had all the hardware necessary to make my dream come true.

All I had to do was write the software. So I downloaded Android Studio and wrote a very simple app for my phone that can take text input and send it to a computer. Then I borrowed a Raspberry Pi from my coworker Nick and wrote a program for it. The program listens for incoming text commands and searches my entire MP3 library (which fits on a 64 GB USB key) to find the requested music.

This is a demo of the very first version of my app, which is able to play one song. Future versions will automatically build playlists of all the songs that match, and will have features like random shuffle, skipping, pausing, etc.
