Skye Boat Song | Outlander main title | world flutes

While this 19th century Scottish song is in no way a love song, its more recent reimagining by Bear McCreary as the title theme to the show Outlander has made it a melody associated with love and romance in current pop culture. I am just OBSESSED with the music for the show. One of my favorite aspects is how the musical colors in the title theme change slightly every time the main characters switch “venues,” even mid season! It’s a subtle detail that adds so much to the show…at least for a music nerd like myself. So, I wanted to try my hand at a world flute arrangement of Skye Boat Song inspired by listening to Bear McCreary’s many versions.

For this arrangement I used, tin whistle, bansuri, xiao, xun, pan flute, and bass flute. I also wanted to experiment a tad with adding a bit more of a rhythmic element using the back of my guitar as a drum. Haha! It’s all about improvising and using what ya got right?! It’s quite a simply part, but I wanted to see what it might add, if anything.
