The Elongated Dome: Structure and Biology
The Xenomorph’s dome is actually a tough exoskeletal shell , giving the creature a biomechanical, almost armored appearance. In the original Alien (1979), the creature nicknamed “Big Chap” has a sleek, translucent dome through which a human-like skull shape could faintly be seen under flashing lights. Artist H.R. Giger built the original creature’s head using a real human skull beneath a clear covering. The reason the xenomprh skull is semi transparent is because initially it was supposed to contain live maggots visible though the dome.
