Dr. Larry Norton, oncologist and the President-Elect of the American Society for Clinical Oncology, speaks with Rabbi Harlan J. Wechsler about life, death, and spirituality in medicine and Judaism. The discussion is organized into three distinct topics: prayer, miracles, and hope. Dr. Norton and Rabbi Wechsler first speak about each topic individually, and then discuss their thoughts with each other before taking questions and comments from the audience. Dr. Norton explains how he views the influence of faith and prayer through a scientific and medical perspective, primarily concluding that hope and positivity, which he describes as by-products of prayer, noticeably help outcomes. Rabbi Wechsler likewise explains his own interpretation of the influence of God on individuals, arguing that “we should believe in miracles but we shouldn't depend on them.”

Recorded on May 6, 2001 at The 92nd Street Y, New York.
