Exercise is Medicine: Prof Rob Newton, The West Australian - ECU Lecture Series

Exercise is now established as a highly effective medicine for increasing the quality and quantity of life for people suffering from chronic disease.

However, it is not just any physical activity or exercise. We are beginning to understand that exercise is a class of different medicines which can be prescribed in many ways to produce specific chemical and structural changes in the body to reverse disease processes and ameliorate treatment side-effects.

Latest research is examining the mechanisms of exercise as medicine to refine prescription, as well as inform development of new therapeutic agents. Research by our team at ECU is focused on management of cancer and the negative impacts of chemo, radiation and hormone therapies, with exercise medicine being proven to greatly benefit patient outcomes, including progression free and overall survival.
