Jeremy Rifkin - Investing in smart cities & regions
Jeremy Rifkin, President of The Foundation on Economic Trends, on smart cities and regions.
A fresh start for the European economy has been the first priority of the European Committee of the Regions from the start of this mandate. Creating jobs and sustainable growth in cities and regions is the most direct way for CoR Members to show how the EU contributes to a better quality of life for citizens. The integrated approach of the "Smart Cities" is widely recognised as one of the most effective ways for politicians to deliver.
Smart cities and regions seek to use the latest in technology to build more sustainable and resource efficient communities. It means a smarter energy sector, greener mobility, upgraded water supply and waste disposal facilities and more efficient ways to light and heat buildings. In practise, this means taking an integrated approach to policy-making bringing together city officials, innovative suppliers, national and EU stakeholders.
With this vision in mind, the European Union is investing in ICT research and innovation and developing policies to improve the quality of life of citizens and making cities more sustainable. The Energy Union, Urban Agenda, European Innovation Partnership ‘Smart Cities and Communities’, Digital Agenda, and the Covenant of Mayors are just some of the ways the EU is working towards building a smarter and more sustainable Europe.
