Ted Cassidy Had a Troubled Career & Tragic Death
Ted Cassidy was born in Pennsylvania but was raised in Phillip, West Virginia. Even when he was young, he was always tall. By the time he was a teenager, he had already surpassed six feet. He was remarkably gifted as a student and also loved played football and basketball in his school years.
The other kids picked on him, not only for being tall but also for being one of the youngest kids in his class. He didn't let these taunts and jabs hold him back from chasing his dream though. In college, he studied acting and speech and later landed a job as a DJ at a local radio station in Dallas, Texas.
It was while he was working at the station that he made his first appearance on local TV. That entry-level role led to a small part in the film The Angry Red Planet, where he played a towering Martian. A couple of years after his first film role he joined the cast of The Addams Family in what was his most iconic role, Lurch.
After that role, he became a prolific voice-actor while continuing to make cameo appearances in hit TV shows. You probably remember seeing him as Bigfoot in the Six Million Dollar Man.
Soon, however, Ted Cassidy realized that he had become typecast. It seemed as if producers only wanted him to play freaks, monsters, and giants. He became known primarily for his stature and deep voice while he craved something more substantial. He would spend his entire life -albeit short- searching for the perfect role that he could be proud of. Unfortunately, he would face his final curtain call before he ever found what he was looking for.
