Railing Design Cast To Look Like Natural Wood

What appears to be carved timber is actually reinforced concrete shaped by hand while the material is still workable.

This railing is built around steel reinforcement and coated with roughly 20–30 mm of mortar. Before the mix hardens, the surface is sculpted and textured to reproduce grain lines, knots, and natural wood contours.

The measurable outcome is durability. Unlike exposed timber that can warp, rot, or attract insects, the concrete structure keeps the appearance of wood while reducing long-term maintenance requirements.

The interesting engineering decision is not the texture itself, but the material substitution. The builder uses concrete for structural longevity while preserving the visual language people associate with natural timber.

Across construction, the most practical solutions often come from understanding both material behavior and human preference.
