"Carey" by Lane Harder with guest artist Matthew Tinjum, MSUM Percussion Ensemble 2023

The April 2023 Minnesota State University Moorhead Percussion Ensemble performance of Lane Harder's 2011 composition, "Carey" featuring drumset soloist and MSUM School of Performing Arts alumnus Matthew Tinjum under the direction of Dr. Kenyon Williams. In the words of the composer, "Carey is my compositional response to Christopher Rouse's percussion octet, Bonham, using the same instrumentation and instrument distribution.
The work is written in the style of progressive drummer Danny Carey, who has performed with Tool, ZAUM, VOLTO!, Pigmy Love Circus, Green Jellÿ, Pigface, and others. Carey's drumming has been a particularly strong influence in my own percussion music. (My percussion pieces The Place of the Hanging Stones, Circus Plenus Clamor Ingens Ianuae Tensae, and Killing Horizon are all directly influenced by his playing.) Instead of using one beat at a variety of tempi as Rouse does, the work uses a number of beats that work not only in their respective tempi but in a variety of meters with common pulses. The work makes use of Tool's songwriting method of accumulating ostinati both within given meters and against those meters. Musically, the work is held together by a Tool "trope" of four eighth notes used in a variety of settings. Carey is dedicated to my friends Jay Majernik and Paul Parkerson, two drummers who enthusiastically introduced me to Carey's drumming some years ago."
