For Gene Kranz, "Failure was not an option" -- the lives of 3 U.S. astronauts were at stake. As a NASA flight director and manager, he helped save the lives of the Apollo 13 crew-- and landed himself a place in history. He's been portrayed on film by Ed Harris, his story has been told in countless books and movies on the U.S. Space program, and he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1970.
