Top Seafood Industry Employers
If you are dead set on working in Alaska’s seafood industry, then take a job with one of the best employers. On the following pages we profile reputable companies that hire hundreds or even thousands of seasonal and year-round employees.
Each company has multiple employment locations in Alaska. Trident Seafoods has both onshore and offshore job opportunities (they’re BIG).
Feeling really jazzed about the seafood industry? Consider that these employers are large enough that they need full-time staff in their corporate offices, often located in or near Seattle, Washington.
Alaska General Seafoods
Icicle Seafoods
North Pacific Seafoods
Peter Pan Seafoods
Trident Seafoods
Unisea
Westward Seafoods
Ocean Beauty Seafoods
Copper River Seafoods
There are many other employers but these are among the best. Visit the JobMonkey Seafood Job Listings regularly for listings and also visit the job boards of these companies.
What it Means to be a Seafood Processor. The work that our processing team does is vital. It adds value to the fish that we pull out of the water. Our processing teams efforts allow us (as a family of fishermen) to make products that are healthy and taste great.
Find out if you will be paid hourly or based on the amount of fish that are processed. Either way ship pay or land pay usually factors out to be $3,000 to $7,000 per month.
Housing in Alaska is limited and often very expensive. Fortunately, most of the processing facilities in the smaller, more remote towns offer employees some
kind of room and board free of charge. Seafood processing plants in the more populous areas will generally charge a subsidized fee between $8 and $15 per day for a bunk-style room and three hearty meals, or will provide free camping facilities that include showers.
Company-subsidized room and board is quite common in remote processing towns; however, accommodations vary by employer. The most luxurious facilities are two- to eight-person bunkhouses with amenities including laundry facilities, showers, a recreation center, and food service. At the other end of the spectrum, some companies offer nothing more than a spot to pitch a tent in a gravel parking lot. Do your homework before leaving to figure out what your options might be in each area you’re targeting.
