Joan Baez - Txoria Txori

Joan Baez sings this contemporary Basque folk song during her concert in Bilboa in 1988. This is a song about freedom. The Basque lyrics follow and then an English translation. I dedicate this song to my father & mother and my family.

TXORIA TXORI

HEGOAK EBAKI BANIZKIO
NEREA IZANGO ZEN
EZ ZUEN ALDEGINGO
BAINAN, HONELA
EZ ZEN GEHIAGO TXORIA IZANGO
ETA NIK...TXORIA NUEN MAITE

THE BIRD WHICH IS A BIRD

IF I HAD CUT THE WINGS TO HER
SHE WOULD HAVE BEEN MINE
SHE WOULD NOT BE FLEES
BUT,THUS
SHE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ANYMORE A BIRD
AND ME...IT'S THE BIRD WHICH I LOVED

Joan Baez ~TXORIA TXORI ~ from Joan`s "Diamonds And Rust In The Bullring" Joan says: This record was made in a bullring in Bilbao, Spain, in 1988. It is dedicated to the Mayor and the people of Bilbao, who came out to see me perform. The song is "Euskera". TXORIA TXORI is about a sweet little bird whose owner like it so much he cuts the wings in order to keep it around, and then realizes, of course, that it is not the same bird..... I want to thank Pasku who taught it to me, and that the Bilbao public for singing so beautifully."
