Gettysburg Movie Review - Why it's so Popular

This review examines the 1993 film, Gettysburg, and why the film resonates so much with audiences in the United States.

It breaks down how Americans memorialize the Civil War, and where this film fits in. With Gettysburg being the site of the 1913 Reunion between the Union and Confederacy, the battle already marked a shift towards reconciliation. The film picks up where the reunion left off, using its platform to give both sides a platform and focusing on the battle itself and the men (mostly at the top).

While it arguably does an injustice by straddling both sides (David Blight certainly argues that reconciliation gives Lost Cause a platform), the film film shoots for broad appeal and accomplishes this.
