The Individual Accountability and Divine Love

Surah Maryam, verses 95 and 96, offer a powerful reflection on the Day of #Judgment and the relationship between #Allah and His #righteous servants. The verses are:

(95) "And each one of them will come to Him on the Day of Resurrection alone."
(96) "Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds—the Most #Merciful will appoint for them affection."

These verses follow a discussion on Allah’s absolute knowledge and authority. In verse 95, the Qur’an emphasizes a deep and sobering reality: “فَرْدًا” (individually, alone). On the Day of Judgment, every soul will stand before Allah completely alone—without #family, friends, or wealth. This solitude reflects the ultimate accountability each human carries. No one will bear the burden of another, and each deed will be weighed with absolute #justice.

This individual appearance underlines the seriousness of personal responsibility in Islam. It dispels false hopes placed in intercession without deeds or blind reliance on lineage, status, or social ties. This moment of complete solitude forces one to reflect on their personal relationship with Allah.

2. Alone Before God: Justice and Reward in the Hereafter
3. From Isolation to Affection: Allah’s Mercy for the Righteous
4. Day of Judgment: Loneliness vs. Love
5. Divine Justice and the Reward of the Faithful
In stark contrast, verse 96 introduces a tone of immense hope. Allah promises that those who believe and do righteous deeds will be granted "وُدًّا" — love, affection, or endearment. The word "وُدًّا" comes from "وُدّ", which means deep, sincere love. Scholars interpret this affection in multiple ways:

Allah’s own love for the believer.

The love of angels for the believer.

The love of people for the believer on Earth and in the Hereafter.
This shows the beauty of faith and good action. While verse 95 describes a soul alone, verse 96 reveals that through sincere belief and righteous living, Allah brings His servant into a circle of divine and communal love. Thus, the lonely soul is uplifted, embraced by the mercy and affection of the Most Merciful (Ar-Rahman).

This pair of verses highlights a central theme in the Qur’an: divine justice balanced with mercy. They warn and comfort, reminding the reader of the serious accountability of the Hereafter and the immense reward of a loving relationship with the Creator.
