Each letter in 2SLGBTQIA+ represents a different identity within the broader queer community. Here’s what they stand for:
2S – Two-Spirit: A term used by some Indigenous North American communities to describe a person who embodies both masculine and feminine spirits or has a unique gender role within their culture.
L – Lesbian: A woman (or non-binary person) who is emotionally, romantically, or sexually attracted to other women.
G – Gay: A person who is emotionally, romantically, or sexually attracted to people of the same gender, often used to describe men attracted to men but also used as an umbrella term.
B – Bisexual: A person who is emotionally, romantically, or sexually attracted to more than one gender.
T – Transgender: A person whose gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth.
Q – Queer or Questioning:
Queer: A broad, reclaimed term that encompasses diverse sexual orientations and gender identities outside of the heterosexual and cisgender norm.
Questioning: Someone who is exploring their sexual orientation or gender identity.
I – Intersex: A person born with physical sex characteristics (such as chromosomes, hormones, or anatomy) that don’t fit typical definitions of male or female.
A – Asexual or Aromantic:
Asexual: A person who experiences little to no sexual attraction to others.
Aromantic: A person who experiences little to no romantic attraction to others.
+ – Plus: Represents other identities and experiences that are not explicitly listed, including non-binary, pansexual, demisexual, genderfluid, agender, and many others.
