2014 William Waters Symposium on Urban Education

Beyond Goats and Charity!
Culturally Responsive and Relevant Pedagogy:
Theories and Practices for Systematic Change.

This symposium provides an opportunity to hear and learn from four scholars and educational activists.
Each keynote brings a particular knowledge about the fundamental issues connected to teaching and
learning within a Culturally Responsive and Relevant Pedagogical Framework.
Keynotes:

Paul C. Gorski is an associate professor of Integrative Studies at George Mason University's New Century College, where he teaches classes on class and poverty (challenging notions of deficit thinking as well as the Ruby Payne framework on the "culture of poverty"), educational equity and environmental justice. He recently designed the new Social Justice undergraduate program there. He has been an active consultant, presenter, and trainer for nearly twenty years, conducting workshops and providing guidance to schools and community organizations committed to equity and diversity

Carl E. James teaches in the Faculty of Education and in the graduate programs in Sociology at York University, Toronto. His research and teaching interests are in the areas of educational and occupational access, equity and opportunities cultural identification, urban education, and youth studies. He is Director of the York Centre for Education and Community.

Gillian Parekh is a scholar in Critical Disability Studies and a researcher for the Toronto District School Board. Her current research addresses issues of education equity and disproportionate representation, institutional structure and exclusion, as well as disability and belonging.

Nicole West-Burns is the Director of School Services with the Centre for Urban Schooling at OISE/ University of Toronto. Since 2008, Nicole has worked with the Centre supporting and guiding professional development to promote equitable educational experiences and outcomes in schools for all students, specifically utilizing the pedagogical framework of Culturally Responsive and Relevant Pedagogy
