This piece is selected from a collection of piano arrangements of folk songs, "folk roots for piano". The Arranger, Hywel Davies, has written: 'The origin of this melody are uncertain, but it is well known as the musical setting for the folk song "the water is wide", the lyrics of which date back in part to the 1600s. In the 20th century, the tune became frequently used as a setting for the hymn "when I survey the wondrous cross", and Benjamin Britten wrote an arrangement pf the melody in 1948. "the water is wide" has been recorded by countless artists, including Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and James Taylor.
