Monitoring the Sun’s magnetic energy and plasma activity
Many of our technological systems can be damaged if a solar magnetic eruption impacts our planet. To be better prepared, University of Michigan researchers are continuously developing and improving a framework to model the Sun’s activity. Explore at: http://csem.engin.umich.edu/tools/swmf/

The Space Weather Modeling Framework has the capability to model the solar wind emanating from the Sun all the way to its interaction with Earth’s magnetosphere. As the Sun’s behavior is detected and modeled, our ability to predict a severe space weather event will become further improve, and we will be safer from catastrophic disasters with power grids, satellites, etc. Both NOAA and NASA have taken Michigan's advanced simulation capability and adapted it to a real time space weather forecasting tool.
The main researchers on this project are:
Research Professor Gabor Toth: https://clasp.engin.umich.edu/people/gabor-toth/
Assistant Research Scientist Daniel Welling
Research Associate Professor Ward Manchester: https://clasp.engin.umich.edu/people/ward-manchester/
