How similar are early Quran manuscripts to each other?

Today, Dr. Brubaker takes a single question from viewer Khadija Moutawakil: We have spoken a lot about variants and corrections, but what about similarities?

Brubaker answers with a general discussion of the density and distribution of corrections and variants in early Qurʾan manuscripts, from his experience. He mentions that the corrections he has documented are not evenly distributed across the text of the Quran, but have areas of greater and lesser density. Also, there are particular manuscripts that have greater density of corrections and/or variants (when compared with the Ḥafṣ text) than do other manuscripts. The details of these things have been the subject of earlier and future Variant Quran videos, so the current video are just some initial thoughts in response to the viewer's good question.

Then, he shows and briefly discusses a book by M.M. Al-Aʿẓamī that recently came to his attention in which the text of Sura 17 as it appears in approximately 16 Qurʾan manuscripts across the centuries is placed in parallel, so that readers can cross-reference the corresponding text in each individual manuscript.
