Why isn't 9/11 a national holiday? Well, to many people's surprise, September 11th is an unofficial holiday. But why isn't it an official Federal Holiday. It almost feels disgraceful that it isn't.
Schools and businesses don't close on September 11th. Instead, it is declared a "National Day of Service and Remembrance". Lawmakers officially named it "Patriot Day" in 2001.

Congress absolutely has the ability to make September 11th a permanent federal holiday. After nine eleven, there were many request to make this day a federal holiday because people feared this national tragedy would be forgotten by an indifferent society.

As a society we mark this day with moments of silence and reflection, but some believe not enough attention and remembrance is given to American heroes on that fateful day.

To note, September 11th is just a few days after one of our 10 national holidays, Labor Day. The United States would either have to move Labor Day to some other date or deal with two short work weeks in a row.

The biggest reason September 11th probably won't be a holiday anytime soon is that Federal holidays cost a lot of money. In fact, every holiday costs the federal government 450 million dollars.

States have also been reluctant to give their employees an extra holiday. In 2002, New York state legislature decided not to make nine eleven a holiday after they learned it would cost $43 million to the state. Other states considered it, but changed their minds after considering the costs.

In 2007, a Senator tried to solve the cost problem. He suggested that nine eleven be made into a holiday instead of Columbus Day.

It's easy to see why many politicians prefer a day of remembrance that doesn't offend anyone.

Just because it's not a federal holiday now doesn't mean it never will be. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday wasn't a holiday until 1984. Memorial Day wasn't declared a federal holiday until 1967. And Thanksgiving was officially made a federal holiday by President Abraham Lincoln more than two hundred years after the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock.
