Six Sigma (Bill Smith, Motorola 1986; Jack Welch GE 1990s — saved GE $12 billion in 5 years) targets 3.4 defects per million opportunities using DMAIC: Define the problem → Measure current performance → Analyse root causes (with data, not opinion) → Improve with tested solutions → Control to sustain gains. The Belt system builds capability: White/Yellow (awareness), Green Belt (part-time project leader, 25–50% time), Black Belt (full-time expert), Master Black Belt (programme designer and coach). Lean Six Sigma combines Lean's speed with Six Sigma's quality — now the dominant form in manufacturing and services. Best suited to high-volume, measurable processes with clear defect definitions.
