Victoria is mid-crisis but there's a 'madman in charge'
Victoria has got a “madman in charge” in the middle of a crisis and it's causing the worst public health catastrophe in Australian history, according to former Victorian opposition leader Matthew Guy.
“This guy’s (Daniel Andrews) a madman. He takes advice from no one, he clearly listens to no one, respects no one, and clearly thinks he’s the smartest guy in the room and everyone else doesn’t matter,” Mr Guy told Sky News.
Premier Daniel Andrews fronted the COVID-19 Melbourne Hotel Quarantine Inquiry on Friday and laid part of the blame of the debacle directly at the feet of Health Minister Jenny Mikakos, prompting her resignation the next day.
Throughout the pandemic, the premier whittled down his cabinet to a so-called ‘Gang of Eight’ ministers who would run the state’s affairs.
“This ‘Gang of Eight’ that’s supposedly running the state – I suspect they’re more just an audience for Andrews for him to lecture them – but most of them are actually retiring at the next election, so they don’t have vested interests in it themselves,” Mr Guy said.
“The premier seems to be running the state like his own little fiefdom."
Mr Guy said the five million Victorians locked up represented a fifth of the country’s population, whilst more than 750 people have died and countless are suffering from mental health issues, all because of the premier’s “nasty, insular, and arrogant leadership”.
“He seems to love authoritarianism just a bit too much.
“I think many in the Labor Party are now thinking they are locked in a room with a madman and this guy ain’t letting them out.
“If you stick a madman in charge of the place in the middle of a crisis, what we get is the worst public health catastrophe in Australia’s history.”
